Tolka is an interpreting aid, not an interpreter. It is built to be honest about that: it shows the other person their own words, it tells you when it is unsure, and it tells you to get a professional when a moment is too important to get wrong.
Please do use it for the doctor's waiting room, the pharmacy, the landlord and the town hall. Please do not rely on it alone for consent forms, a diagnosis, a legal agreement, or anything you are signing.
1. The agreement
These terms are between you and Tolka, the developer of the Tolka iPhone app. Installing or using the app means you accept them. If you do not, do not use the app — and if you have paid, Apple's refund process is described in section 5.
2. What Tolka does
Tolka transcribes speech, translates it, explains what the other person appears to mean given the situation you described, and suggests things you might say back. It uses a large language model to do the explaining.
3. What Tolka is not — read this one
It is not a certified or human interpreter. Many settings — hospitals, courts, police stations, immigration offices — have a legal right to a qualified interpreter. Tolka does not replace that right, and you should ask for it.
It is not medical, legal or financial advice. Tolka is not a medical device, it does not diagnose, and it does not treat. Nothing it says is a professional opinion.
It can be wrong. Speech recognition mishears, especially in a loud room and with an unfamiliar accent, and language models can produce fluent text that is simply incorrect. The app warns you when its confidence is low, but a confident answer is not a guarantee of a correct one.
Do not rely on Tolka alone for: consent to a medical procedure, a diagnosis or a treatment decision, anything you are signing, a legal or immigration proceeding, or an emergency. In those moments Tolka itself will tell you to get a professional interpreter. That warning is the product working, and it is worth taking seriously.
4. Your responsibilities
- Use Tolka lawfully, and respect the privacy of whoever you are speaking with. Recording or transcribing people has different rules in different countries; those rules are yours to follow.
- Do not use it to deceive anyone about what is being said, or to impersonate an official interpreter.
- Do not attempt to extract credentials from the app, resell access, or route other software through Tolka's service.
5. Subscriptions and payment
The first 30 translations are free, with no account and no card. After that, Tolka is sold as an auto-renewing subscription in three durations: weekly, monthly and yearly. Every plan is the whole app — nothing is withheld from the cheaper ones.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase.
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.
- You can manage or cancel a subscription in the App Store section of your iPhone's Settings, at any time, in a few taps.
- Prices vary by country and may change; a price increase never applies to a period you have already paid for, and Apple asks you to confirm before it takes effect.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us — we cannot issue one. Use reportaproblem.apple.com.
Fair use. Every plan carries a fair-use ceiling of roughly 200 translations a day. It exists to stop one runaway user making the service unaffordable for everyone, not to segment customers, and no ordinary use comes close to it. If you do reach it, translation keeps working — the optional extras, like refreshed summaries and suggested replies, pause first. Tolka will not cut you off mid-conversation.
6. Availability
The interpretation and advice features need an internet connection and a third-party language model, so they can be unavailable through no fault of yours or ours. Speech still appears live on screen when the network is gone, because that part runs on your phone.
7. Liability
Tolka is provided as it is, without warranty of accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of it, and our total liability is limited to what you paid in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer in the EU or the UK, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything on this page.
8. Changes and ending
These terms may change; material changes will be dated at the top of this page. You can stop using Tolka at any time by deleting it. We may suspend access that is being used to abuse the service or break these terms.
9. Law
These terms are governed by Danish law. If you are a consumer, you can also bring proceedings in the country where you live, and that right is not taken away by this section.
